Startex Water Tower in Pink
The original mill building was constructed in 1896 along the Middle Tyger River in a community named Tucapau. In 1936, the mill was named Startex, the brand name of the textiles produced at the plant owned by Spartan Mills. Parts of the mill structure still exist like the U.S. Post Office and the mill store where the employees would shop for their household food, supplies, and clothing. This mill, like many others, built a village of small houses for the workers to live adjacent to the facility. This community is now known as Startex.
